What is LASIK surgery?

Lasik is eye surgery performed to:

  • Reduce the dependency on glasses
  • Reduce the dependency on contact lenses

Lasik is an abbreviation, which stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. In this surgical procedure, the shape of the cornea will be changed permanently. The procedure should only be performed by a licensed ophthalmologist not every eye doctor has been trained in the procedure.

The most common procedure:

  • A microkeratome (knife) will be used to cut a flap in the cornea
  • A hinge is created at one of the flap
  • The flap is folded back to reveal the storma (the middle section of the cornea)
  • A computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma
  • Flap is put back in place
